Dermaplaning Treatment

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a treatment that exfoliates your skin and gets rid of dirt and vellus hair better known as “peach fuzz.” Our Aestheticians use a tool called a dermatome, which looks like an electric razor, and moves it back and forth at a 45 degree angle to scrape off the top layer of dead skin. This treatment is commonly combined with other treatments, like a facial or chemical peel.

FAQ

If you’ve tend to feel self-conscious about the fine fuzzy hair that naturally grows on your face, you may be a great candidate for a dermaplane treatment! This quick, gentle procedure accelerates the cellular turnover process by very softly scraping off the uppermost layer of cells from the epidermis. Because there are no chemicals or lights involved in dermaplaning, it can be performed on sensitive skin, darker skin, and people with rosacea. It can even be performed on your skin if you’re pregnant! While this treatment is appropriate for most skin types and many situations, you may not be a good candidate for dermaplaning if you have an active acne breakout or have a history or cold sores or keloid scars.

We want your skin to be healthy and resilient for your dermaplaning treatment! To support this, your number one task will be to avoid sun exposure before your appointment. Wear sunscreen every day and, if it’s sunny out, consider also wearing a hat. Also, about five days before your scheduled appointment, stop exfoliating at home. The dermaplane treatment will do this for you, so you don’t want to thin out the layer of cells that make up the top layer of your skin. Finally, if you wax your face, schedule your wax at least two weeks before undergoing dermaplaning. This will help avoid unnecessary irritation due to over-exfoliation.

No. You may notice some slight redness to your skin after your dermaplane, however, you don’t need to schedule time off if you don’t mind that extra glow. Redness usually resolves within 24 hours. To promote optimal healing and cellular turnover without needless irritation, we suggest using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer after your treatment.

Having the uppermost layer of cells removed from an area of your skin will leave that region vulnerable for a short time. After your treatment, maintain the use of broad-spectrum sunscreen when you go outdoors. Again, consider wearing a hat if it’s particularly sunny out. Also, refrain from resuming your normal exfoliating routine for at least a few days after your appointment. Until all redness has disappeared, it’s also beneficial to avoid excess heat and chemical exposure (such as chlorine).

Generally, dermaplaning is considered extremely safe and effective. Your provider has been fully trained and uses extraordinary caution when treating your skin. The inherent risks that come with scraping away skin cells include a change in the pigment of the skin, infection, and the formation of keloid scars

Dermaplaning doesn’t hurt. Your provider may use a sharp instrument to remove skin cells, but they also use a feather-light touch! In fact, many people say that dermaplaning is more comfortable than laser treatments or waxing. We’re happy to talk with you about the dermaplaning process and what you can expect during this treatment.

We recommend waiting four weeks between your dermaplaning appointments. This time between appointments allows your skin to complete it’s normal rejuvenation cycle, which is thirty days, before having the top layer removed again.

People who suffer from acne or have excess oil should not receive dermaplaning. The reason why you want to avoid this is because once the hair is removed from the area, the oils may cause bacteria growth which could spread the acne.
