The ABCs of SPF

The ABCs of SPF - Silk Touch Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpaProtecting our skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation is crucial for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin and reducing the risk of skin cancer. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by using sunscreen products with an adequate Sun Protection Factor (SPF). At Silk Touch Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa, we offer a range of skincare products designed to shield your skin from UV damage while enhancing its overall health and appearance. However, understanding what is in SPF can be confusing, as it involves various factors and considerations.

Understanding SPF Ratings

The SPF rating on a sunscreen indicates its protection against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the primary cause of sunburns and skin damage. The higher the SPF number, the greater the protection offered. However, it’s important to note that no sunscreen can provide 100% protection, and higher SPF values do not increase the protection proportionally.

Additionally, SPF ratings only measure protection against UVB rays and do not account for ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to premature aging and skin cancer.

Broad-Spectrum Protection

To ensure comprehensive protection against both UVB and UVA rays, it’s crucial to choose sunscreens labeled as “broad-spectrum.” These products contain ingredients that absorb or reflect both types of UV radiation, providing more complete coverage.

Broad-spectrum sunscreens often combine chemical and physical filters, such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide, to achieve this level of protection.

Application and Reapplication

Most experts recommend applying a generous amount, approximately one ounce or a shot glass full, to cover all exposed skin areas 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure.

It’s also crucial to reapply sunscreen every two hours or more frequently if you’ve been sweating or swimming, as the product can wear off or dilute. Additionally, apply sunscreen to often-overlooked areas, such as the ears, lips, and neck.
