What is a Tummy Tuck and How Does It Work?

A Tummy Tuck, otherwise known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the stomach and tightens the underlying abdominal muscles resulting in a more contoured stomach and waist. This procedure is especially popular amongst those who have undergone pregnancies or have lost a substantial amount of weight and are living with loose, sagging skin or excess fat. Tummy Tucks not only give our patients a more contoured and lean look, it also boosts their confidence for years to come.

At Silk Touch in Boise, ID, we specialize in a full range of Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) techniques— including traditional, reverse, mini, and extended approaches—with all options customized towards your goals.

Types of Tummy Tucks?

Traditional (Full) Tummy Tuck

This Tummy Tuck is ideal for patients with both muscle laxity and excess skin above and below the belly button. The incision is made low on the abdomen from hip to hip and will include a small incision around the belly button. The excess skin is removed, the muscles tightened and flattened (if needed), and the remaining skin is repositioned along with the belly button.

Mini Tummy Tuck

This version of Tummy Tuck is great for candidates who have mild to moderate skin laxity below the belly button only. As we are only targeting and removing skin below the belly button, there is no need for belly button repositioning. Since there is less skin removal compared to the Traditional Tummy Tuck there is typically less recovery time.

Reverse Tummy Tuck

Reverse Tummy Tucks are ideal for folks who only have loose skin above their belly button. What makes this unique, is that the incision lays under the breasts along the lower chest wall and lifts the remaining skin towards the breasts. This technique pairs great with our breast enhancements procedures like augmentations and lifts.

Extended Tummy Tucks

For those who have excess skin around their entire waistline or after massive weight loss, an Extended Tummy Tuck is going to be your best option. As there is skin that needs to be removed around the midsection, a longer, but still low, incision that extended past the hips is required. Extended Tummy Tucks also involves belly button repositioning, muscle repair (as needed), and can see longer recovery times. This version of Tummy Tuck can also be paired with Traditional or Mini techniques dependent on the needs of the patient.

Enhanced Tummy Tuck Results with Liposuction

Add Abdominal Liposuction or Liposuction 360 For More Dramatic Body Contouring

For enhanced results, we often pair our Tummy Tucks with PAL liposuction of the abdomen, a technique commonly called Lipo-Abdominoplasty. For those seeking more dramatic body shaping, we offer Lipo 360–a comprehensive approach that focuses on removing fat from the entire midsection, including upper and lower stomach, flanks (love handles), and lower back to expertly shape an hourglass figure noticeable from all angles.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

While the best way to know if you’re a good candidate for a tummy tuck is through a personal consultation, there are a few key signs that can help you decide if this procedure might be the right fit for you.

You Have Lose or Sagging Skin In or Around Abdomen

The goal of a Tummy Tuck is to remove excess skin—with many candidates election for this procedure after pregnancy or significant weight loss. If you can’t seem to get your skin laxity back, even with diet or exercise, this procedure is designed to restore the abdomen with a firmer, smoother appearance.

You Have Separated or Weakened Abdominal Muscles

Many people experience diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles), especially post-pregnancy. A tummy tuck tightens these muscles, helping to flatten the abdomen and improve core strength.

You’re Near Your Goal Weight

A tummy tuck isn’t a weight-loss procedure. Ideal candidates are close to their target weight but struggle with excess skin or small pockets of fat that won’t go away with lifestyle changes alone.

You’re in Good Overall Health

Good physical health is important for safe surgery and smooth recovery. Non-smokers without underlying conditions that could impair healing are typically great candidates.

You’re Done Having Children

Future pregnancies can re-stretch the skin and muscles repaired during a tummy tuck. For long-lasting results, it’s best to wait until your family is complete before undergoing the procedure.
